Dunderberg Glade, October 18, 2015

After four years of drought conditions, September turns were some of the most challenging to obtain. Then after a warm spell, October was even more challenging.

Earlier in the week my friend Carl sent me some pictures he took of Jack’s “Glacier.”

While far from optimal, it still looked skiable. Carl estimated the possibility of making 4-6 turns before dropping off the bottom edge. This would be the tentative plan for Sunday. Then the weather changed. Mother Nature served up a dusting of snow.
Early Sunday morning my friend George sent a text with this photo from Dunderberg Meadows/Green Creek Road:

I forwarded this message to Spence and we formed a new plan to meet George and ski some “freshies” before they melted.
About five hours later we met George further up Dunderberg Meadows Road. George found a glade that had a base of mostly relatively soft pine needles and pine cones mixed in with a few rocks, stumps and sticks. He told us about the many options in the upper glade as well as the mini-groomer he created by using a shovel and taking many laps in the lower glade.

Next, it was time to make some “groomer” laps.

Mission accomplished. We all got in our October turns.
