Dunderberg, August 23, 2014

Mike and I took a recon mission up to Dunderberg to scout ski conditions and find some September ski possibilities.

First, we parked near Kavanaugh Ridge.

Next, we checked out Jack’s Glacier.

This was the smallest I have ever seen Jack’s Glacier. The snow appeared to be mostly craptastic with an abrupt ending. We would pass on this for now and check out Hidden Glacier next.

Stev looks at the abundant rockfall combined with mudslides on Hidden Glacier:

Maybe the Heart Patch would have better snow.

Looking back at the Heart Patch:

The top half of the Heart Patch felt great with a few inches of slurpy-like snow, possibly leftover from previous precipitation. The bottom half was more like iceyness combined with refrozen coral reef. At least we were half right about finding better snow here.

We took another look at Jack’s Glacier on the hike back out:

However, we decided to save it for another day.
